A Banknote for WBG?
The Bank of England is seeking nominations for a historical figure in the Visual Arts to replace Adam Smith as the face on the new £20 banknote and are keen to have Scottish artists put forward, particularly women. When asked in an interview whom she would propose on BBC Radio Scotland Alice Strang, curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, cited Wilhelmina Barns-Graham as she was a pioneer of British Modernism who had a foot in the art circles both North and South of the Border. Barns-Graham is one of the artists Strang has included in a forthcoming exhibition at the gallery Modern Scottish Women Painters and Sculptors 1885-1965 which opens on 7 November.
