Alice Strang : A Scottish Artist in St Ives and a Portuguese Artist in London: How Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Paula Rego Triumphed in the British Art World
This lecture examines the careers of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, born in Scotland in 1912 and of Paula Rego, born in Portugal in 1935. Beginning with their decision to leave their home countries and to settle in England, it traces their professional development as they faced challenges and secured triumphs, before becoming established as leading artists in the British art world.
Alice Strang is a Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Galleries of Scotland. A former Trustee of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, she is a co-curator of the forthcoming exhibition Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance, to be held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Two between 23 November 2019 and 19 April 2020.
