Barns-Graham stays the night at Glasgow airport, before flying to Lanzarote.

5 Feb

Barns-Graham returns to the lava site near Haría from last year and begins a small drawing, she feels she is out of practice.

7-9 Feb

Back to the lava site, but Barns-Graham struggles to work because without a chair, she has to sit on the rocks. She visits her friends Maureen, and artists Tony and Jane O’Malley.

10 Feb

Barns-Graham goes for a stroll in the evening to look at rock formations.

11 Feb

She has lunch with the O’Malleys, later meeting with the Scotts in the evening.

12 Feb

Barns-Graham travels back to the lava site near Haría, and works on a white chalk drawing on black paper.

13 Feb

Barns-Graham works on a new drawing of the lava,

“v. difficult but intriguing subject, circular movement of lava subject.”

14 Feb

She has lunch on the beach, then works on the same drawing as the previous day. She calls this trip a “work-holiday” (WBG/4/1/55/24).

15 Feb

Barns-Graham visits a religious museum in Haría, then explores the area to find a new subject.

16 Feb

She returns to the lava site  –  one of her previous subjects, and travels to Costa Teguise and Punta Mujeres.

17 Feb

Barns-Graham visits the César Manrique Foundation and finds it “was very worth while.” She makes more drawings at the lava site at Punta Mujeres.

18 Feb

Barns-Graham has a more restful day, after writing some postcards and shopping, she prepares some paper for work.

19-23 Feb

Barns-Graham returns to Punta Mujeres and begins some new work.

24 Feb

Barns-Graham’s last day in Lanzarote. She goes to La Geria and finds

“lots of wonderful subjects there.” (WBG/4/1/55/31)

Barns-Graham flies back to Scotland. In a summary of her trip, she discusses how each year she sees the island in a different color and this year it was a pink island:

“I’ve known it as a black island, a green + yellow (flowers) + a pink island.” (WBG/4/1/55/32)
